Welcome!

I am making this blog to chronicle my life as I go forward. I have been napptural/natural for 7 years give or take and am now ready to start my lock journey with sisterlocks. I wanted to start a blog to record my journey as well as to have a place to talk about my passions such as my relationship with my God and friend, Jesus Christ, my wonderful family, my obsession with Haiti, and my amazing friends.

Welcome, I hope you enjoy your stay.

Living with "Testers"

Well here we go. So I have about 12 inches of natural hair all around that I always wear in twists. I like to have it straightened about once or twice a year to play around with it, but for the most part I just wear them in twists which is why I thought I might be ready to do sisterlocks. I re-do these twists every 2-3 weeks and it takes me 3-5 hours each time so I thought I might actually save some time with sisterlocks which I hope to retighten myself every 5 weeks or so hopefully in 4 hours or less if I can get good. We'll see!

Well, I went and got these four babies done at the local salon. What do you think? I like them!

BUT.... I have a few concerns:

1) The lady who did them is a trainee, and I'll be the first person who she has actually done this too. That does sometimes worry me... but the price is so much better so I just don't know...

2) These took her about 30-40 minutes to do. 4 in 40 minutes... hmm so if I get about 450 locks... well, you do the math.

3) Because she was worried that the locks would slip out of my hair because it is a bit fine in areas, she put knots at the end. At the time this did not worry me at all, but then I was reading more about sisterlocks and am now super worried that the knots at the ends will make it impossible to retighten them down the road!!! Help, I need advice!

4) At first she said that these were "small" size, but then the other lady from the salon came in to check on how we were doing and told her that these were actually "large" size according to the grid. This worries me for a few reasons. First, I'm concerned that she might not have been able to tell what size she was putting in... Second, I really want to get medium to small size because of the look I'm trying to achieve -- I know that sisterlocks really swell up over time and I want to have the size I want at that point so that I can do the styles I'm so looking forward to. Now I understand that the density of my hair may make "large" the best type for me, but what worries me is that the trainee *may* not really know what is small and what is large and, thus, how to do the locks in order to get me the look I'm going for. But I don't know really. She is a really nice person and seemed more than happy to do my locks for me, which is great because I worried about maybe ending up with someone who would look at the length of my hair and feel it was too much work and cut corners etc. I hope that it works out with this lady, but I am just worried about these few little things.

Despite all these thoughts, I'm still really enjoying my testerlocks. So far I have received only one negative review... but it has really gotten to me. A good friend of mine told me he didn't see why I would want to do this to my hair and why don't I just leave it the way it is...sigh. So I'm having second thoughts, but the appointment to have them installed is not until middle of November so I still have some time to think and pray about it.

Would love to have your input! (Especially on the knot issue! Not sure what to do about that...)

Hi, I got my Sisterlocks installed less than a month ago (September 26 & 27) in Albany, NY. I also had a trainee, though I wasn't her first client. When she installed my test locks, she did six in a grid pattern so that I could not only band the locks easily when I washed my hair, but also so I could see the grid easily and know what my whole head would eventually look like.
You have a *much* different curl pattern than I do - your hair is much silkier, but I still wonder if your trainee may need to build more clientele first? I know - somebody has to be her first, but... well, this is a lifestyle investment, not just a hairstyle.
Try reading through this http://reneahenry.blogspot.com/2007/07/what-to-look-for-in-consultant-and.html I found it helpful and was able to ask my trainee some questions before we got started. She wasn't offended (thank goodness) I think she realized that I just wanted to get this right.
I wish you the best and hope you'll have the outcome that you want. Keep blogging so we see how it turns out!

Hi Evelyn,
I have had my Sisterlocks for 11 months now. You can read my blog if you'd like - http://www.designsbyevie.blogspot.com

I agree with the previous comment, the information at that post was very helpful to me.

I am not a consultant, my advice is only from one locked sister to another. I was very concerned when I had my SL's installed. I was asked if I preferred a trainee vs. a trained consultant, and I went with a consultant. Maybe a trainee would be ok for retightenings but not for me because I am very particular. I had a bad experience with a trainee doing my retightenings, but that's another story.

This is an investment and you want to get the very best start possible. Think of your install as laying the foundation for your home.

I can't tell from the pictures but I don't see a grid or pattern. I know that your hair is very long but I don't understand the knots? My original consultant didn't think my hair texture would lock easily. At 11 months my hair still hasn't locked. Most of my ends are still open and I started with 100% natural hair, no relaxed ends, etc.

Ok, I didn't mean to write a novel, but please do your homework. I would definitely read the information mentioned earlier on "what to look for in a consultant" and follow your instincts!

Keep blogging and let us know what happens. For me, getting Sisterlocks was the best thing ever! I love my hair!

Good luck,
Evie

Oh! Man! Now I see that people are leaving comments on my blog! Thanks so much for the suggestions M and Evie!! Evie, I enjoyed your pics! Will comment soon

Thanks for the suggestions. As you can see, I did end up going with a different consultant. She did a great job and was very knowledgeable and professional. I'm glad I made the decision.

Thanks a lot ladies!
